Welcome…
The aim of this site is to reach Stanhope's around the world, and to make available and share data - do you perhaps have a 'Stanhope' or a variation of the name on your family tree?
The name originates from Stanhope, Co. Durham, and the earliest known recording is Sweyn de Stanhope of Durham Assizes 1242 AD. Richard de Stanhope inherited his father’s land in Northumberland and became MP for Newcastle during 1377 and 1379, then Mayor in 1379. Marriages to rich heiresses brought more land and property to the Stanhope's in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. Money from wool was exported to Belgium and Russia in their own ship bringing the wealth to build grand houses.
Myself, having researched the Stanhope name for more than thirty years, I have found many colourful, eccentric and fascinating characters - sets of twins; triplets; a film star; some even incarcerated in the tower of London. One beheaded on Tower Hill, and the amazing Lady Hester Stanhope, Queen of the Arabs. There are Barristers, Lawyers, Policemen, Authors, Admirals and Clergy, three lines of Earls and a few Agricultural Labourers; Feuds, Prophecies, and a Curse! Mansions, Castles, Cottages, and Number 10 Downing Street.
Please take some time to browse my website, email if you have any information or questions - many thanks.
Kind regards
Olive Alderman
